Ten cars damaged as vandals run amok in Belfast

BY CLAIRE GRAHAM

A car belonging to a senior Orangeman was one of 10 vehicles smashed with a hammer.

Rev Mervyn Gibson’s car was among those damaged during a spree in the Dunraven Avenue, Hillsborough Parade, Templemore Avenue and Ballyhackamore areas of east Belfast on Friday night.

Witnesses said they saw a car coming along with a boy hanging out of the vehicle swinging a hammer and smashing windows.

Orange Order chaplain Rev Gibson described the attacks as “pure vandalism”.

“For me I think it was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said. “It was just random houses, it’s an act of pure vandalism by a couple of eejits.”

The attacks began after 9pm and continued into the early hours of the morning.

Councillor Gavin Robinson said the spate of attacks are “scandalous”.

“This is not the first time we have had a vandalism spree in east Belfast,” he said.

“This only raises a fear of crime in east Belfast and it needs to stop.”
