Terror threat sparks call to keep PSNI reserve
The threat from dissident republicans and loyalist paramilitaries is increasing at an “alarming” rate, the Police Federation of Northern Ireland has warned.
Chairman Terry Spence said that Chief Constable Matt Baggott must reconsider phasing out the full-time reserve by the end of the month. Mr Spence said he has written to Mr Baggott “asking him to note our sincere apprehension at the move and the disastrous consequences it could bring”.
“At a time when the terrorist threat continues to escalate, how can the Chief Constable move to the position of phasing out the remainder of the full-time reserve. There is a very real escalation to the threat that continues to prevail here from dissidents. On top of that, loyalist paramilitaries are trying to exert their influence and control in many parts of Northern Ireland.”
