Tesco manager thief jailed

A former Tesco night manager who stole just over £35,000 from his employer has been jailed for nine months.

Michael Thomas Kearns (42), formerly of Claudy, Co Londonderry, admitted stealing the money from the Tesco store at Main Street in Limavady.

He deposited it in a Co Sligo post office where he intended it to be used by his family after his planned suicide.

Kearns also pleaded guilty to a further charge of perverting the course of justice. Both offences took place between August 6 and August 9, 2010.

Jailing him at the Crown Court in Derry, Judge Piers Grant said after Kearns took the money in bags from the supermarket and went to Sligo he returned and was questioned by the police. Kearns told them he'd been stopped by a gang of four men in a car who ordered him to take the money from the supermarket.

Judge Grant added that Kearns had “an extensive relevant record for offences of dishonesty”. On release from jail, Kearns will be on licence for a further nine months.
