The day when Stormont really was full of jokers

By Rebecca Black

He is officially Stormont's biggest joker. Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has been crowned our wittiest MLA.

The accolade came as Stormont Speaker Mitchel McLaughlin hosted the search for the best in local comic talent.

More than 2,000 pupils entered this year's competition, which took place at Parliament Buildings yesterday.

Lily Barlow from Glencraig Integrated Primary School in Holywood took home the coveted prize of Voice Box Champion after telling her joke about an inflatable school: "An inflatable boy went to an inflatable school, with inflatable pupils and inflatable staff. One day he ran amok with a drawing pin. Pssssst! Psssssst! Pssssst! Psssssst! The deflated principal called him into her study and said: 'You've let me down, you've let yourself down and you've let EVERYONE down!'"

Lily beat off competition from 19 other youngsters to take home the title and an iPad mini.

Other winners included Killian Duffy from Our Lady's, Tullysaran, Co Armagh, and Bob Pearson from Fleming Fulton in Belfast. Mr Durkan was found to be the funniest MLA.

The event was organised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

The organisation's Northern Ireland policy officer Vivienne Fitzroy said the day was a great success, with fantastic engagement between pupils and their elected representatives.
