A space odyssey awaits east Belfast next week as W5 braces itself for the return of the Emerald Garrison, Ireland's Star Wars costuming club, for Invasion Belfast III.
Having run successfully in 2008 and 2009, Invasion Belfast III promises even more characters, photo opportunities and sci-fi fun, from October 2-November 7.
It has been 33 years since Star Wars exploded onto our screens, but writer-director George Lucas has left a legacy which fans believe will never be surpassed, with a story that delights both parents and children.
The opening weekend will be covered by Shine 102.4 FM’s Marc and Owen Show. The hosts of the show, Marc Savage and Owen Carvill, will be on hand all day interviewing The Garrison troops, Star Wars actors Jeremy Bulloch (who played bounty hunter Boba Fett) and Richard LaParmentier (who played Admiral Conan Motti, famous for being ‘force choked’ by Darth Vader in 1977’s A New Hope) and most importantly, they’ll be talking to the fans who are at the show.
Marc, a die-hard Star Wars fan, says visitors will be spoilt for choice as to where to point their cameras with the mass of Storm Troopers, Darth Vader, Tusken Raiders, Jedi, Bounty Hunters, Clones and Wookies swarming all over the east Belfast venue.
If that’s not enough, new for 2010 will be a fan-built Star Wars Props and Models exhibition with props and replicas carefully crafted by the Emerald Garrison, including a full size Scout Walker and Y-Wing Starfighter.
Marc says: “It is going to be the biggest and best Invasion yet so we want to meet as many Star Wars fans as possible and we want to hear why Star Wars is so important to them. We will be recording all day Saturday for the show and our websites, so look our for us.”
Adrian Lutton, head of exhibitions and design at W5, says: “W5 is offering this exhibition, lecture theatre and photo opportunities free with admission to W5. In this climate when people are increasingly aware of the costs of a family day out, W5 is catering for fans of all ages — families and Star Wars aficionados alike.”
The Marc and Owen show broadcasts every Thursday from 9pm-11pm on Shine 102.4FM in Banbridge and across the world on www.shinefm.org.uk. Google ‘themarcandowenshow’ to find them on Facebook and YouTube.
