Thief dupes Belfast woman with claim he'd lost his boomerang

An east Belfast woman had her handbag stolen when a thief pretended he had lost his boomerang in her back garden.

The woman had just been dropped off at her address in Gilnahirk Park, Tullycarnet, when she was approached by a man who asked to take a look in her back garden for a lost boomerang.

The householder told the man to use the side gate while she entered her home to leave in shopping and her handbag. She then met the male in the back garden where they both looked for the boomerang.

But once the man left the woman noticed that her handbag, which she had set down in the living room, was missing.

The bag contained cash, bank cards, a mobile phone and keys.

The distraction burglary took place at around midday on Friday.

The male is described as 5' 10" tall of slim build with short dark wavy hair. He was wearing a blue woolly jumper, grey trousers and spoke with a southern accent.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses or anyone who can identify the male to call 0845 600 8000.
