Third hoax bomb alert in Carrickfergus estate in a week

A security alert in Carrickfergus has been declared an elaborate hoax – the third in the same area in just over a week.

A number of residents were evacuated from their homes in the Broadlands Gardens area during the incident yesterday morning. Army bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene where two objects were found before the alert was declared over.

On January 19, around 30 residents had to be evacuated from their homes in the same area of the Co Antrim town during a previous alert.

Another alert the following day was declared a hoax.

Alliance Party councillor Gavin Norris condemned those responsible. "I call on those behind these security alerts to stop their irresponsible actions," he said.

"It is unclear whether these are co-ordinated acts of intimidation, elaborate pranks, or if there is some other reason.

"Whatever the case, I hope that those responsible will be caught and held accountable for what they have done.

"This has once again caused disruption for people in the Broadlands area who just want to live their lives in peace."
