Thirsty work for ASDA pair

By Michael Bashford

Workers at two neighbouring Co Down supermarkets are keeping their fingers crossed after earning the chance to make a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa.

The ASDA stores on Circular Road, Newtownards, and Main Street, Bangor, came top of the league in a UK-wide fundraising challenge run by charity Thirsty Planet, beating more than 150 other ASDA supermarkets in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the north of England.

Now one lucky colleague from each store will be selected to travel to Malawi next May, where they will help Thirsty Planet's partner charity, Pump, Aid build unique Elephant pumps to supply water to rural communities.

Each pump provides water for up to 500 people and is funded by a guaranteed donation of 50p for every pack of Thirsty Planet sold — enough to give one person water for life.

Between them, the two stores have funded eight Elephant pumps, bringing water to 4,000 people since March.
