Thomas Magee's heartfelt letter will be my special memento, says dad

By Cate McCurry

These are the heartbreaking words four-year-old Thomas Magee lovingly wrote about his "special" dad months before he was killed in a farming accident.

Thomas was buried on Sunday, three days after he died on his family's farm in Co Fermanagh.  The P1 pupil at Maguiresbridge Primary School was recently asked to write about someone special in his life as part of a school project.

In the heartfelt letter, Thomas describes how his dad, David, looked after him when the pair were working together around the farm at their home near Maguiresbridge.

"Daddy is the best farmer in the whole wide world," he wrote. "He makes me feel happy every day, he tells me I'm the best boy."

His doting father described his surprise at first reading the letter and how he will now treasure it for the rest of his life.

"I couldn't believe he wrote it about me," he said. "I will be keeping it as a special memento."

David added that Thomas was always by his side and how he loved helping out on the farm.

"If I came in for a cup of tea he came in and would follow me out again," he added. "He had a wee toy farm of his own, he wasn't into television. If he wasn't outside with me, he was with his wee toy farm.

"If Thomas was with me on the farm he was never bored, but was also content on his own with his toy tractor, carrying a few stones somewhere to make a fence."
