Thug sent to prison for punching partner

By Eamonn MacDermott

A Londonderry man has been jailed for punching his partner in the face four months after he completed a domestic violence course.

Declan Michael Paul McGinley (38) appeared at the city’s Magistrates Court yesterday, where he admitted two counts of assaulting his then partner on February 6 this year.

The court heard that the injured party described him as being quite drunk when he punched her in the face as he demonstrated how he had hit people in the past. Defence solicitor Paddy McGurk said on the night in question McGinley had taken mephedrone and alcohol.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that McGinley completed a course — the second he attended — on domestic violence in October 2010 before carrying out this assault in February 2011.

The judge said the court had to take domestic violence very seriously and sentenced McGinley to four months in prison.
