Thug who punched and choked his former partner is jailed

By Ashleigh McDonald

A 40-year-old man who dragged his ex-partner by her hair, as well as punching and choking her in her own home, has been handed a 12-month sentence.

Sean Paul Jones, whose address was given as HMP Maghaberry, landed "vicious and violent blows" on the woman, who was attacked on May 30 last year.

Prosecuting barrister Robin Steer told Belfast Crown Court that the woman had gone to a city centre pub with her ex, but had left after a few drinks.

The woman went back to her flat, but was followed by Jones who forced his way into her home. He approached her in the living room and then proceeded to punch her around the head while verbally abusing her.

Jones also kicked her, dragged her by the hair and choked her, telling her she would never see her children again.

The woman managed to dial 999 and managed to shout out her address before Jones grabbed the phone and smashed it.

Jones pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and criminal damage to the phone. He was on bail at the time of the attack.

Jones was ordered to serve six months in prison with the remaining six months on licence.
