Thug's shame at CCTV film of assault on a fellow reveller in Belfast

By Ashleigh McDonald

A man was too embarrassed to watch CCTV footage of him attacking and stamping on a fellow reveller in the centre of Belfast, a court was told.

Bryan King (33), from University Street in the city, knocked his victim unconscious before stamping on his prone body in an alleyway leading to Thompson's Garage in the Donegall Square area of the city in the early hours of March 19 last year.

Belfast Crown Court heard the attack occurred shortly after King finished a period on licence which he received for a previous assault.

After watching footage of the incident – which showed King punching and kicking his victim several times before stamping on him as he lay unconscious – Judge Corrinne Philpott QC said: "This is the type of assault that can cause significant skull fractures."

The court heard that both King and the injured party were drunk. King subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.

King was handed an 18-month sentence, nine months of which will be served in prison and the remainder on licence.
