Toy gun dumped in Ballycastle harbour sparks security alert

A security alert was sparked yesterday after a toy gun was dumped in a Co Antrim marina.

The plastic gun, which broke in two when it was recovered, had been abandoned in water at Ballycastle harbour. Specialist PSNI underwater search teams were drafted in to investigate after a member of the public raised the alarm.

In a statement PSNI confirmed: “Police are investigating a report of a suspected weapon in the water at Ballycastle harbour. Arrangements are being made to remove this item for further examination.”

Independent councillor Seamus Blaney said he was astounded such a large operation could be mounted before anyone realised the gun was a toy.

“I am amazed they went through all of that but didn’t know it was a toy gun. I suppose this will be more cost to the public purse,” he said.
