Traveller hit woman with bullhook, court is told

A woman was injured by a bullhook after being caught up in a feud among Travellers in Belfast, the High Court has heard.

Patrick Mongan struck her on the back with the handle of the 4ft-long baton he had been swinging about his head, prosecutors claimed.

The 27-year-old accused, of Mill Race, Belfast, allegedly brandished it after trying to set up a meeting with a man he was said to be in dispute with.

Three live shotgun cartridges were also found in a caravan Mongan was allegedly using at the Travellers’ development off the Monagh Road.

He is charged with possessing ammunition in suspicious circumstances, aggravated assault on a female, threats to damage property and possession of an offensive weapon.

Crown counsel Nicola Auret confirmed that all complainants have made withdrawal statements since the alleged incident on March 15.

The judge adjourned the bail application to see if a suitable location could be found for the accused to stay at.

Mr Justice Treacy added: “I'm prepared to release him on bail, but only if he has an appropriate address.”
