Trawler skipper: we nearly died

By Anna Maguire

The captain of a trawler which sank 10 miles off the Co Down coast has spoken of the moment he and his crew mate nearly lost their lives.

Experienced fisherman Stephen Kearney was saved along with his crew mate by another boat when their vessel, Snowdonia, began taking on water.

However, their rescue almost ended in tragedy when Stephen's fellow fisherman became entangled in a rope attached to the Snowdonia.

“We just went up on a wave and the back of the boat went into the water and she just never came back — she just went down that quick,” Stephen told UTV.

They were saved by another fishing boat, the Tribute. The pair were later airlifted to hospital by the Irish coastguard after spending 10 minutes in freezing water.
