Trawlermen in funds hope for future of fleet

By Linda Stewart

Fisheries Minister Michelle O’Neill has ruled out a fishing vessel decommissioning scheme, but remains committed to providing financial support to help with fleet modernisation and improved efficiency.

Fishermen in Northern Ireland said they hoped things could now move on and that £4m of EU and national funding could be freed up and used to help secure the fleet’s future.

Anglo-North Irish Fish Producers Organisation chief executive Alan McCulla said: "In moving forward we hope that DARD's review of the European Fisheries Fund will result in these finances being used in a way to help secure the future of the fishing fleet."
