Tree falls on car as strong winds batter province

By David Young

As storm force winds battered Northern Ireland last night, three motorists in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, had narrow escapes in two separate accidents.

At the entrance to the sprawling Rathcoole housing estate outside Belfast, a giant tree toppled over on to a blue Renault Megane.

The PSNI said: "Motorists are advised to avoid the Shore Road in Newtownabbey this evening and seek an alternative route."

Despite the extensive damage caused to the Renault by the falling tree, no one is believed to have been injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, on Upper Road in Greenisland, near Monkstown, two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.

One man was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.
