By Staff Reporter

Tributes have been paid to the former Sinn Fein Down Councillor Frank McDowell who died yesterday.

Mr McDowell was elected to Down District Council in 1985, and then stood for Sinn Fein in a Westminster by-election in 1986.

Paying tribute to Mr McDowell, Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams said he had "remained deeply committed to his community."

Former Stormont Minister, Sinn Fein's Chris Hazzard, also paid tribute to Mr McDowell, and added: "Today Sinn Fein and the wider community in South Down have lost a friend, a comrade, a life-long republican activist."
