Tributes have been paid at the funeral of a Co Tyrone man who died suddenly while driving his car last Friday.

Tony McBride passed away on Brookmount Road in his native Omagh.

Mr McBride's funeral was held in Sacred Heart Church in the town, where he was an assistant sacristan.

He lived in Culmore Park and served at the church for more than 30 years.

Mr McBride leaves behind his wife Chrissy and daughter Ciara, as well as his brother Gerry and sister Lita.

Drumragh parish priest Fr Eugene Hasson paid tribute to his colleague and friend.

"Tony was very loyal, faithful and committed to what he was doing and to the service of God," he said.

"It is a great loss to his wife Chrissy and his daughter Ciara, his extended family and friends and to all of us in the parish of Drumragh."

Fr Hasson said Sacred Heart was full for yesterday's Requiem Mass.

"The service was very sad," he said.

"I hope to God that his family got a lot of support out of it because there was a real sense of support.

"He was deeply respected in the community. He had a good community interest with Gaelic football as he had refereed at football matches."

Mr McBride was described as being fondly remembered in GAA circles.

Tributes have poured in on Facebook as people expressed their sadness at his passing.

Anthony McGrade wrote: "Tony was an absolute gentleman.

"He was always smiling and so very helpful."

Mary Ann Cleary-Mclaughlin added: "A shocking loss to all who knew him."

She added: "The older I get, I am weak in understanding loss, but the stronger I grow in faith."
