Trouble erupts after hoax alerts

Trouble flared in Lurgan last night during police searches after two hoax bomb alerts in the town.

Petrol bombs were thrown at police as they carried out searches in the Victoria Street area.

An hour later, a vehicle was hijacked in the Bells Row district. Police say a firearm was also seen during the incident.

Earlier in the day the Tullygally Road in Craigavon was closed after reports of a suspicious object.

The second alert in Lurgan began after a warning that a bomb had been left on waste ground.

Meanwhile, houses were evacuated in north Belfast last night after a suspicious device was found in the Limestone Road area.

It was the second alert in north Belfast yesterday. Police say “nothing untoward was found” in the earlier Tennent Street incident.
