Twelfth of July Belfast missile thrower jailed was on 'three day bender' amid riot

A man who threw missiles at riot police in Belfast amid a "three day bender" was jailed for three months today.

Stephen Clarke woke with his clothes soaked from being hit by a police water canon but no memory of what had happened, a court heard.

The 51-year-old, of Hillview Court, Belfast, was arrested over his involvement in July 12 disorder on the city's Woodvale Road.

Trouble flared in the area over restrictions on an Orange Order parade passing the nearby Ardoyne district.

Clarke was convicted on a charge of riotous behaviour involving throwing a stone and a bottle at police.

Belfast Magistrates' Court heard he later told officers: "I was on a three-day bender."

He also said he woke after it to find his clothing soaked.
