Two girls injured during clashes at Belfast interface

A TEENAGE girl was taken to hospital after being injured during clashes between youths.

The 17-year-old was struck by a stone during trouble in the Castlereagh Street and Mountpottinger Road area of east Belfast yesterday afternoon.

A second girl, aged 13, suffered minor injuries during the trouble when the window of a car was struck by a stone on the Albertbridge Road.

It is the latest in a spate of incidents in the area in recent days.

Ulster Unionist MLA Michael Copeland said he was concerned by the trouble. "Violence in this area is so frequent that it is easy to view it as routine," he said.

"But for those involved it can be serious, even life-changing."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police in east Belfast responded to a number of reports of groups of rival youths throwing stones at each other in the Castlereagh Street and Mountpottinger Road areas.

"Police are maintaining a presence in the area."
