Two held over shooting 'murder bid'

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a shooting in north Belfast.

Searches were carried out in the area and in North Down, a PSNI spokesman said. A man aged 44 was shot in Wallasey Park off the Ballysillan Road on Wednesday night.

Chief superintendent Nigel Grimshaw said there could be no justification for bring violence of any sort onto the streets.

"This type of incident adds nothing to communities, instead it can lead to fear, anxiety and tension.

"This cannot be allowed to happen, and the police will do everything in our power to keep people safe, deal with this criminality, and ensure that people can go about their normal business in peace."

The detained suspects are aged 46 and 47.

Mr Grimshaw appealed for anybody with information to contact police, adding: "Detectives will continue to actively pursue this investigation to ensure that all those involved in carrying out this attack, are arrested and brought before the courts."
