Two men held over Newry gun attacks

Two men have been arrested in Co Armagh after two eastern Europeans were shot in the legs in Newry last month.

They were shot on Sandy Street and Armagh Road in the city.

Detectives made the arrests after searching a house in Churchill Park, Portadown, on Tuesday night.

A 34-year-old is being held on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to the shootings on September 17. He is also suspected of possession of firearms in suspicious circumstances and possession of class A drugs.

A 20-year-old is being held on suspicion of possession of firearms in suspicious circumstances and possession of class A drugs.

Both were last night assisting detectives with their enquiries at Musgrave police station.

Suspected drugs and three suspected firearms were recovered in the search in Portadown.

A 26-year-old Lithuanian man has already been charged with two counts of attempted murder, kidnapping and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence in relation to the shootings in Newry.
