Two teenagers have been released on bail after being arrested in connection with the murder of a homeless man in Co Londonderry.

Piotr Krowka, a 36-year-old Polish national, was found dead in an abandoned parochial house at Glen Road in Maghera on April 3.

He had suffered injuries to his head and body.

Two 16-year-olds were detained in the Maghera area yesterday as part of the murder investigation and taken to Antrim for questioning.

They have now been released on bail pending further police enquiries.

Mr Krowka had lived in the area for a number of years and is believed to have a sister residing nearby.

The local community has been rallying round to assist with the cost of the funeral.

A JustGiving page has already raised more than £1,800 thanks to donations from over 100 people.

The fund's organiser, Magherafelt woman Paddy Walls, said she was delighted with the response from all parts of the community.

"We were all shocked by the death of Piotr," she added.

"I just wanted to try to do something useful and I've found there's a lot of really generous people around who feel the same as me. People across the south Derry area have shown they want to acknowledge Piotr as a person and treat him with some respect in death.

"I have had support from some local business interests and want to thank them for getting involved, and if anyone else wishes to help give Piotr a dignified funeral they can do so through the JustGiving page at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/paddy-walls.

"I've set a target of £5,000 to cover funeral expenses, though at this stage there's no indication of how much it will cost. But I know there won't be any money there to pay for a decent burial."

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Boyce said: "I am keen to identify Piotr's movements between Good Friday and Easter Tuesday, when his body was discovered, and I would appeal to anyone who was in contact with or who may have witnessed Piotr during this time to please contact us.

"I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious at this house during the timeframe to contact detectives at our incident room at Magherafelt PSNI Station by calling 101, quoting reference number 919 of 03/04/18."
