Tyrone GAA player Sean Hackett on trial for murder of his father

A former Tyrone GAA player has gone on trial accused of killing his father.

Sean Hackett, who captained the county's minor team to the 2012 Ulster title, is charged with murdering Aloysius Hackett last January.

Mr Hackett (60) was found shot dead outside the family home at Aghindarragh Road near Augher.

Sean Hackett denies the charge of murder, and two other charges of possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

Yesterday a jury of six men and six women was sworn in to hear the case at Dungannon Crown Court.

The first evidence is due to be heard this morning.

Members of the Hackett family, including his mother Eilish and three siblings, watched from a packed public gallery.

Sean Hackett gestured to them as he entered the dock.

He spoke only to confirm his identity and to say he was ready to stand trial.

The judge Mr Justice Stevens indicated the trial would last between one and two weeks.
