A nine-year-old girl was rushed to hospital after being knocked down by a van while crossing the road after getting off a school bus in Co Tyrone yesterday.

The incident happened outside her house in the village of Pomeroy just after 3.30pm.

"This is a terrible incident for her family," local Sinn Fein councillor Cathan Mallaghan said last night.

"The thoughts of the whole community are with the girl and her family.

"Everyone is shocked by what has happened.

"I'm sure everyone across Tyrone will echo me in sending our thoughts and best wishes for a full recovery."

It's understood the P5 pupil suffered multiple serious injuries in the accident, including a fractured skull and a potential clot behind her eye.

Cookstown UUP councillor Mark Glasgow has urged all road users to take care, particularly in areas where schoolchildren may be present.

"We're at the end of term and many kids are excited to be looking forward to the summer break and I would urge all road users to be extra vigilant," he said.

"Everyone across the community will be hoping and praying that the young girl recovers and I would urge everyone travelling on our roads at this time of year to take their time, take extra care and show respect to everyone using our roads, particularly around schools and school buses when children might not be aware of oncoming traffic."

The PSNI also urged drivers to take extra care when approaching school buses.

"When you're driving the roads be extra alert that wherever you are travelling, kids getting off buses may not be expecting you coming along the road in the same way you may not be expecting them to walk out from behind or in front of the bus," it said.

"Slow down and take extra time going around the bus. Same goes for you if you're getting off the bus, take the extra few seconds to stop, look and listen. It will save your life. Today was a very serious incident, let's not have any repeats."

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed: "We received a report at 3.37pm of a nine-year-old girl being hit by a van outside Pomeroy.

"We sent one emergency crew to the scene and the girl was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital in the first instance."
