The Ulster Unionists have rallied around Doug Beattie who has revealed he considered resigning over a series of historical tweets in which he used misogynistic and racist language.

He admitted he came “very close” to stepping down as party leader and that he was “personally absolutely destroyed” by the controversy over his own past actions.
