A Northern Ireland woman has been appointed to the board of the officially recognised UK Press regulator.
Maire Messenger Davies is a Professor of Media Studies at Ulster University.
The Press Recognition Panel, set up under a Royal Charter after the Leveson inquiry, has given its backing to Impress.
Campaign group Hacked Off has welcomed the move, but bodies representing the Press warned it will bring "state-sponsored" regulation of newspapers.
Impress has few members, and most major newspapers instead signed up to the Independent Press Standards Organisation, a voluntary independent body which is not backed by the government.
