Uncertainty over Ardoyne shots 'unhelpful'

THERE were calls yesterday for police to confirm whether or not shots had been fired in Ardoyne on Monday night, August 5.

A PSNI spokesperson said the service was investigating the reports of two shots being fired at a police vehicle in the Brompton Park area at about 10.30pm. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

Sinn Féin Councillor Gerard McCabe said: "As far as local people are concerned it could have been fireworks. Speculation or claims that there was an attack on the PSNI vehicle are not helpful and the sooner this is either confirmed or refuted the better."

He said the Ardoyne community had undergone a "stressful time" with the weekly Orange Order protests "cranking up tensions", adding: "The last thing they need are any unrepresentative micro groups in the area trying to make themselves relevant."
