Unlocked homes in Derry hit by burglaries

The PSNI in Londonderry has appealed for information after three houses in the city were hit by burglars in quick succession.

The break-ins happened in the Skeoge Road, Gleneagles and Fern Park areas on Monday.

At some time between 4pm and 9pm entry was gained to a home on Skeoge Road where a door had been left unlocked. Later at around 11pm police attended a house in Gleneagles where a mobile phone was stolen. Again entry was gained through an open door. A further burglary in the Fern Park area of the city also happened Monday.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man in the Gleneagles area shortly after 11pm on Monday after he was spotted trying the door handles of cars.

He remains in police custody.

A PSNI spokesperson said that property from the burglaries had been recovered from the individual they arrested and appealed to anyone who believes that they may have been a victim of a burglary but who might not have reported it to police to come forward.

The public have been urged to contact the PSNI's Reducing Offending Unit on Derry's Strand Road on 101, quoting reference 1510 with the date 07/08/2017.

Information can also be given anonymously through independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
