Unused properties in every part of Northern Ireland

By Victoria Leonard

The Housing Executive has vacant properties right across Northern Ireland, analysis shows.

The Belfast region, which includes the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council area, has the highest number of empty homes - over 300 are located here.

A total of 321 properties have been vacant for a combined 345 years. That is despite 12,952 households there waiting for a home for an average of just under 39 months.

The Housing Executive has 6,157 people registered as homeless and 8,590 registered as in housing stress in this area.

Figures seen by this newspaper show there are 205 actionable properties which have been lying vacant, including 86 flats and 85 houses. The most common reason is that they are "difficult to let" (87 properties) followed by major change of tenancy repairs (66 properties).

The Housing Executive is also in possession of 116 non-actionable properties in the Belfast area, which have been vacant for a combined 323 years.

A further 308 properties are vacant in the northern region, which covers the Londonderry and Strabane, Causeway Coast and Glens, Mid & East Antrim and Antrim and Newtownabbey council areas.

Here, 11,621 applicant households are waiting for 37.2 months on average.

The Housing Executive has 7,649 people in housing stress and 5,682 homeless people on its waiting list for this area. The region contains 122 actionable properties. Again, the most common reason for the vacancies was that they were "difficult to let".

A further 186 non-actionable properties are vacant in the northern region.

The Housing Executive's south region covers the council areas of Ards and North Down, Newry, Mourne and Down, Mid-Ulster, Fermanagh and Omagh and Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon.

In total, 297 properties here have been empty for a combined 350 years despite 13,038 applicant households waiting an average of nearly 38 months for accommodation.

Here, there are 7,455 applicants in housing stress and 4,517 homeless people on the Housing Executive's waiting list.

A total of 151 actionable properties and 146 non-actionable properties are empty in this area.
