Van Morrison's message to pal Brian Kennedy over cancer fight

By Ivan Little

Van Morrison has sent his best wishes to his former backing singer Brian Kennedy who is battling cancer.

In a rare public message Van, who famously sang with Brian before the visit of President Bill Clinton to Belfast's City Hall in 1995, used Twitter to pass on his support for the ailing star.

The post to Brian said: "Thinking about you and wishing you a full recovery. Best wishes, Van."

An attached photograph showed Van and Brian posing together in a terraced street in Belfast at the time they were working closely together.

Significantly the picture appeared on the cover of a 1997 record they both sang on, The Healing Game.

Brian, who is 49, was recently diagnosed with rectal cancer and he is halfway through five weeks of radiation treatment, though he has continued to perform at occasional concerts.

He recently spoke about his reconciliation with his terminally ill brother Bap Kennedy, an acclaimed singer/songwriter who also has cancer.

Fifty-three-year-old Bap has also collaborated with Van in the past, appearing as support to him in concert and co-writing with him on an album.

On his Twitter account, Brian Kennedy said that he was delighted to have another week of treatment under his belt.

He added that he was looking forward to playing a weekend gig for Innishvilla Football Club from Co Cork in a local hotel.

Fans took to social media to say that they were praying for Brian.
