A CHILDREN'S play area and creche have been targeted by vandals who caused thousands of pounds of damage to a community building in Londonderry.

Doors connecting the creche and children's outdoor play area were smashed and an all-weather surface ripped up in this latest act of vandalism at the Old Library Trust in Derry's Creggan area.

The community facility provides a number of services for people living in the area, including children and the elderly, but also generates income by renting space to businesses.

George McGowan, project director at Old Library Trust appealed to the local community to help stop further acts of vandalism.

He said: "This has been an ongoing problem for a while but it is getting worse.

"On Monday staff arrived at the building to once again have to clear up after windows were broken, doors smashed and the children's play area wrecked. Our centre is open to everyone in the local community and we deliver a whole range of services.

"While we don't like to shout about this vandalism, after last weekend we just thought enough is enough."

Mr McGowan added: "Children as young as two were due here to use the creche and it was only down to a huge community effort that we were able to get th e place cleaned up but it is soul destroying to have to do this repeatedly."
