Vessel's captain is facing prison

The master of a cruise vessel who breached four maritime safety regulations by sailing his vessel on the River Foyle last year has been remanded in custody on the charges at the Crown Court in Londonderry.

James Graham Paul Stronge (64), from Clea Lough Road in Killyleagh, Co Down, has admitted breaching the safety regulations by sailing the detained Sarah May III on the River Foyle on February 17 of last year.

A prosecution barrister told Judge Piers Grant that Stronge had admitted to having 23 passengers and two crew members on the vessel which was only licensed to take 12 passengers and three crew members.

He also pleaded guilty to lifebelt and liferaft breaches.

The judge revoked bail and remanded Stronge in custody until next Wednesday and warned the defendant that a custodial sentence was likely.
