Veteran independent councillor Alan Chambers joins UUP

By Amanda Ferguson

After 25 years as an independent councillor, Alan Chambers will be standing for the Ulster Unionist Party in next year's Assembly elections.

The UUP has selected the Ards and North Down Council veteran as a candidate for North Down alongside its councillors Daniel Allen and Carl McClean.

Mr Chambers wrote on social media that he had joined the party as he was "in tune with what UUP stands for".

UUP leader Mike Nesbitt said: "Alan has years of experience in the council, and Carl and Daniel are two young men who have risen to the challenge after being elected to Ards and North Down Council in 2014.

"Their selection bodes well for the future."
