Viable explosive device found after Belfast security alert

A viable explosive device was discovered after a security alert in Belfast.

Police were called to the scene of a suspect device in the Lavinia Square area of south Belfast on Thursday.

Police and ATO recovered a viable device which has been taken away for further examination. The surrounding area was closed during the operation, and has since re-opened. Some residents were also evacuated from their homes but have since been allowed to return.

Police have appealed for information.
