A man has been beaten to death in Londonderry, police have said.
The victim, named locally as Paddy Harkin, in his 40s, is believed to have been assaulted early on Sunday morning in the Bayview Terrace area of the city, police said. Another man was critically injured and is being treated in hospital in Belfast for serious head injuries.
A man was arrested and is being questioned by police, who are treating Mr Harkin's death as murder.
The incident happened in a residential/business area close to the city centre and Strand Road police station.
Sinn Fein deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness knows the family.
"I know Paddy and I must say he was a very inoffensive man and I was shocked and saddened this morning when I was told of his tragic death," he said.
SDLP councillor Mark H Durkan extended his sympathies to the dead man's family.
"This incident certainly is quite shocking and is not the type of thing anybody likes to hear of," he said.
Police inquiries are continuing.
