Victim in 'serious' condition after attack

By Allan Preston

A man in his 20s was in a serious condition in hospital last night after being attacked outside a popular nightspot in Londonderry.

Police believe he was involved in an altercation with two other men around 1.30am, just as bars were emptying on the busy Waterloo Street area of the city centre.

The injured man was taken to Altnagelvin hospital where he was still being treated last night.

One traumatised witness posted on Facebook to say she was distraught to see the victim lying injured on the street.

"I hope you recover really soon," she said.

"I will never get that image out of my head, whoever did this to him should be ashamed of themselves, he was left in a really bad way, nobody deserves to be left in that bad of a way ever." Detective Chief Inspector James Mullan urged witnesses to come forward.

"At this time we think that a number of other men came to try and break up the fight in Waterloo Street," he said. "I would ask them, or anyone who knows anything about this assault, to contact detectives at Strand Road Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 127 of 06/11/16."
