Victim of bar attack has saved six lives

A man who died after being assaulted outside a bar has helped give the gift of life to six people.

Darren McBrearty was killed in an alleged single-punch attack in Omagh last month.

It has now emerged that organs donated by the 28-year-old saved the lives of six people. Organ donation campaigner and GAA pundit Joe Brolly said it was an "amazing contribution".

He added: "They have had their lives transformed. In many cases, those who have been the recipients of transplants will live long lives, they will have families and return to work. The donation of organs is such an enormous and amazing contribution to society."

Mr McBrearty, who was from the Gortmore Park area of Omagh, died surrounded by his family in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast on August 6.

He suffered serious head injuries after being attacked outside licensed premises in John Street two days earlier.

An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with Mr McBrearty's manslaughter.
