Extra security and safety measures have been put in place at Victoria Square shopping centre in Belfast after a man scaled a Christmas tree in front of horrified onlookers - which was captured in a video widely shared online.

Following the dangerous incident, the shopping centre's management has been forced to act to prevent festive revellers repeating the incident.

The man is thought to have climbed the tree at the weekend.

He can be seen putting his life at risk as he scaled the tree while onlookers jeered and urged him to be careful.

He climbs to the top of the iconic tree in the middle of the shopping centre as friends urge him to be careful saying "don't fall".

At one moment the man hits a decoration which becomes partially detached from the tree.

He manages to make it back down to the bottom before jumping off and performing a forwards roll.

The PSNI said they had not received any reports regarding the incident.

Victoria Square centre manager, Michelle Greeves said: "At this busy festive time we always put customer safety at the forefront, so we have put extra measures in place to ensure that we continue to do so."
