Several cars were left scattered across the M1 after a car transporter shed its load in a crash.

Drivers have reported chaos on the stretch of the motorway on the northbound section between junctions 11 and 12 close to Craigavon after the incident at around 6pm on Thursday.

Road traffic authorities said the car transporter overturned shedding its load. Around 10 cars are involved as well as the lorry. It's expected the road will be closed for a number of hours.

A bridge was also hit which will require an engineer's inspection before the road can be safely reopened.

At the scene Belfast Telegraph photographer Kevin Scott said the clear up would be slow as police were working to turn cars queued up on the motorway toward the last junction to allow recovery vehicles to get access to the scene.

He said roads around the area were heavily congested.

Emergency services including the ambulance service remain at the scene.

Police, however, have said there are no reports of injuries at this stage.

An Ambulance Service spokesman added: "The Ambulance Service attended the scene of a road traffic collision involving a car transporter over turning on the M1 motorway between J14 –J15 at 6.08pm.

"Two resources were sent to the scene (one station officer and one ambulance). The driver of the lorry was checked over by ambulance personnel and did not require to go to hospital."

Attempts have been made to contact Johnston Car Transport.
