Video: Robber meets his match at Belfast off-licence

These dramatic images and cctv footage show the moment a robber lost his bottle at a south Belfast off-licence.

Eamon Brown (29) was jailed on Tuesday for six years after attempting to rob the same off-licence twice in four months.

Brown, who was described as an alcoholic, attacked staff at The Vineyard on the Ormeau Road, and stole a bottle of whiskey. He also tried to steal cash and cigarettes.

CCTV images, which have been posted on YouTube, show Brown entering the premises to ask for cigarettes. He acts as though he is about to pay for them, but then attempts to grab the packet off the counter.

He is thwarted by the quick response of the shop worker, but then tries to jump over the counter. The assistant pushes him off and jumps across the counter to try to restrain him.

Brown is wrestled to the ground outside the shop and held there until police arrive.

Tony McGurran, owner of The Vineyard, said he was proud of his staff for standing up for themselves.
