Warning on counterfeit pound coins

Police are urging the public to check their change after reports of a number of counterfeit £1 coins in circulation.

The fake money has been detected in several areas of Northern Ireland, including north Down and Dundonald.

While the counterfeit coins are similar in weight, colour and appearance to the genuine coins, they are missing the ring of dots normally present around the circumference.

The Royal Mint says there are a number of other clues to detect fakes, which are outlined on its website.

Anyone who suspects they have been offered counterfeits is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000 or use the confidential Crimestoppers phone number on 0800 555 111.
