Warning over Facebook naming of man and woman over alleged criminal damage

The PSNI has issued a warning after a number of Facebook pages made unsubstantiated claims linking a man and a woman from west Belfast with criminal damage on a motor vehicle.

The incident the pair have been connected to happened in the early hours last Sunday morning on the Shaws Road.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Woodbourne local policing team said: "We would like to make it clear that the allegations made against these individuals are completely unsubstantiated and that there is no evidence linking them to this offence.

"Such unfounded accusations can have a negative impact on ongoing police investigations and may hinder any possibility of successful prosecutions. More importantly they can cause significant distress and anxiety to those unfairly named.

The public are asked to refrain from making allegations online, and warned that doing so may lead to a criminal offence being committed.
