Warning to women after latest Derry sex attack

By Brendan McDaid

Women in Londonderry were last night urged to arm themselves with safety alarms following the latest in a series of sex attacks.

A woman in her 20s was indecently assaulted in the Asylum Road area less than three hours after the New Year celebrations in the city.

The culprit, who is described as Asian with short facial hair, is believed to have been dropped off by a taxi at the Queen Street junction prior to the attack at around 2.50am on January 1.

It is the latest of several unconnected reports of early morning sexual assaults on young women in the city.

Foyle Woman's Aid director Marie Brown said: "There needs to be something done about sexual violence and a whole re-look at the issue."

John Boyle, SDLP councillor for the Northlands ward, where the attack occurred, added: "I would urge women to take extra precautions, such as safety alarms."
