Watch as huge fire engulfs derelict Newtownards building: Blaze treated as suspected arson attack

A suspected arson attack has gutted a derelict building in Newtownards.

The blaze took hold at a carpet business on the Portaferry Road on Friday night.

A tweet from Trafficwatch said: "A21 Georges Street/Portaferry Road, Newtownards is closed because of an extensive fire at Carpetrite. Diversions in place".

The PSNI in Ards posted: "We will have to keep Georges Street closed until tomorrow. It’s much the same problem as we had in South Street where we are concerned the gable wall may collapse due to all supporting beams destroyed.

"Shouldn’t be any issues tonight but anyone using this route in the morning should expect delays as all traffic will need to go through the town."

A video posted by the PSNI shows the blaze taking hold.

It's understood the fire took hold after 10pm.

A total of four fire engines dealt with the blaze, which took hold in the first floor and spread into the roof space.

It's understood the fire is being investigated as being "suspected deliberate".
