A 24-year-old man who took part in a burglary during which a watch was removed from the wrist of an 84-year-old woman as she lay sleeping has been jailed for 12 months.
Shane McAnenny, from Dervock Place in Londonderry, pleaded guilty to being one of three men who broke into the woman's Waterside home on June 22 last year.
He was arrested one month later after investigators found his fingerprints on the frame of the kitchen window which had been forced open.
A prosecution barrister told Judge Piers Grant the woman shouted at two intruders in her bedroom when she woke up. Among the items stolen in the burglary were her watch, which had been on her wrist, a gold chain, her purse and keys. None of the items was recovered.
Judge Grant said McAnenny, who had 17 previous criminal convictions, had caused the woman considerable shock and distress by his actions.
