Watch stunning drone footage of sailing in Strangford Lough

By Claire Cromie

It could almost be the Mediterranean. But these stunning turquoise waters were captured by drone footage in our very own Strangford Lough.

Newtownards Sailing Club hosted the GP14 Championship of Ireland over the August bank holiday weekend, welcoming sailors from across Great Britain and Ireland.

Dozens of boats topped with a rainbow of colourful spinnakers can be seen gliding across the Co Down lough, as Scrabo Tower looms in the background.

But it isn't all leisurely sailing - take a closer look and you'll see the tactics spurring some competitors to outdo their rivals.

After five races over three days, Shane McCarthy and Damien Bracken from Greystones Sailing Club in Wicklow took home the top trophy.

McCarthy cemented his reputation as the finest sailor in these isles, having already won the British Championship earlier this year - a feat last achieved by Englishman Richard Estaugh in 1996.

Locals Mark Taylor and Amanda Crossthwaite did Newtownards proud, lifting bronze fleet trophy.
