Weather and traffic alert: Heavy rain and snow warning for Northern Ireland

By Claire Williamson

Heavy rain is expected to hit parts of Northern Ireland on Friday night.

Motorists are advised of potential localised flooding and driving conditions will be difficult due to surface water and spray on the roads.

A yellow warning for rain has been issued for County Antrim, County Armagh and County Down.

It is expected to last from Friday at 5pm until 2am on Saturday morning.

The Met Office said there was the potential for a spell of snow in high ground and the chance of some at lower levels - which isn't expected to lay for long.

The chief Forecaster said: "A band of heavy rain will move north across the warning area with widespread 15-20 mm, isolated 30 mm, expected in a 6 to 9 hour period. There is some uncertainty regarding the exact westward extent of the heavy rain.

"Additionally, a spell of snow will bring a few centimetres to high ground, mainly above 200 metres, but some temporary accumulations are also possible at lower levels for a time during the evening."
